The motorcycle sales boom continues

After last year's boom in motorcycle sales, many had expected sales figures to level off or even decline slightly due to increased delivery problems. But in 2021, Switzerland is once again making significant gains, unlike many other countries in Europe and overseas.

Switzerland no longer seems to get out of the motorcycle boom and has again significantly increased in sales of motorcycles (excluding scooters) by 19%. In particular, many small brands that are relatively new to the market are proving to be big winners of the boom. The question now is how sustainable this trend is. The boom is said to be due to the continuing strength of domestic tourism; the main boost came from the new legal regulation allowing 16-year-olds to ride up to the 125cc class from January 1, 2021, which led to numerous new purchases in the 125cc class.

Many new customers for the small ID card
For the renewed growth in motorcycle sales 2021 is primarily responsible for the massive increase in sales of motorcycles up to 125 cc. Sales rose from 1925 to 8480 motorcycles, an increase of 340%! Many 16-year-olds have taken advantage of the new legal regulation that allows them to purchase and ride motorcycles up to 125 cc since 1.01.2021. The need for individual transportation to escape the masses on public transport continues to be great due to the Corona pandemic that continues to prevail. In addition, the motorcycle is cheaper and more flexible compared to the car, and a vehicle that can be used as a fun meter for the vacations.

Germany suffers setback
In Germany and also in other countries in Europe, Asia, South America and the USA, the sales success in 2020 was followed by some setbacks. In Germany, the poorer sales figures are explained by another effect of the Corona pandemic, namely the fact that there are major delivery problems at the manufacturers, who cannot deliver numerous models at all or only with delays.

Switzerland's big winners
For once, it is many small brands that are among the winners and can profit from the boom in the entry-level class. Many of these no-name brands have thus been given the chance to fight for a market share and make a name for themselves.
