Real and fake desert machines

What began with the advent of the Paris-Dakar rally has been adapted over time to the needs of civilized conditions. Most touring enduros are not really suitable for the desert with the basic setting. They are too heavy, equipped with the wrong tires, etc., but the spirit has remained.

KTM 1190 Adventure

Orange desert giant

The name KTM has a good reputation in the enduro and motocross scene. In the Dakar Rally, too, the Austrians have been bringing home the title year after year for more than a decade. The strengths certainly include the high robustness of the machines, which are subjected to enormous loads. Adapted from the 450-cubic success model from racing (top right), an adventurer has been developed for civilization. The bull weighs in at "only" 212 kg dry weight and develops the most power with its impressive 150 hp, but it is not made for larger excursions alone into the desert - at least without modification - but the comfort and feel are preserved.

Yamaha XT 1200 Z SuperTénéré

The great Ténéré

Clearly, the manufacturer wanted to be in no way inferior to its competitors with the most successful model of the 80s and, in keeping with the times, also delivers a large 1199-cubic desert steed for the road into the race. The comfort, reliability and modern technology speak for the Japanese mother beast, although it is primarily designed for asphalt touring. Comfort, performance and reliability are key strengths of the Super Ténéré.

Yamaha XT 600 Z Ténéré

Once a role model

The current Ténéré is hardly reminiscent of the first model, especially visually it has lost meier opinion very much, adventure looks different, especially the windshield I consider superfluous, because the top speeds are very much within limits. Also the studded tires and the kickstarter are gone. The current Ténéré is in comparison with the Ténérés of the 80s a city variant, but for all those who do not want to climb on a giant part the modern, agile alternative to the Super Ténéré.

Honda Crosstourer

Powerful design piece

Honda can look with pride at its new Crosstourer, the design is really successful, sporty, modern, progressive, that fits a contemporary desert ship, which in reality will primarily conquer the expanses of the asphalt. With around 130 hp, which the 1237-cubic V4 engine is capable of, it is well equipped for all distances. With its 275 kg, it is one of the heaviest in its class and is not made for agile maneuvers through the woods; rather, its basic equipment is naturally made for civilization. But a great part, really!

Honda XL 700 V Transalp

A classic

In 1987, the first Transalp came onto the market. It was the answer to the then Yamaha Ténéré, which successfully conquered the market in the 80s. However, it never came close to the Ténéré, because compared to the Ténéré, it was never a real beauty. Today, it joins the ranks of the "small" enduros in Honda's model range. With around 60 hp, the 680-cubic enduro is well in the midfield and offers all the comfort that a modern enduro can offer, including ABS. It is the small alternative for nostalgics.

Triumph Tiger Explorer

Combative look

Who would have thought that the British would ever build such a battleship for "off-(the)-road". The look of the 137 hp three-cylinder is really strong, a real fighter look. But even here I would have to pass, I would have no desire to push the 267 kg heavy lump through the swamp or the desert, here you get a break quickly. But on the roads, the part makes a real impression. Comfort, power and a certain exclusivity are certain with it. For adventure trips with a focus on the road, the Tiger Explorer is a real alternative.

Suzuki DL 650 A V-Strom

Small and powerful

Suzuki does not currently have any big touring enduros in its range. Anyone who wants a Sugi will have to make do with this model for the time being. Visually, I don't find the bike really convincing, the designers could have done a lot more here, but the 69 hp of the 650 cubic engine is a positive surprise. Performance and travel ability of the Asphaltenduro can be credited to it, but who wants a bike that also pleases, I recommend the new DL 1000-A, which is to come on the market in 2014. In addition to the higher performance, the bike knows how to please thanks to its tasteful, racy design.
